Fields, Henry W. 99, Cottage Grove Place, Cedar Rapids and formerly of Tipton, IA died on November 5, 2017. Henry was born in Tipton, IA January 30, 1918 to Frieda Werling Fields and Forrest Filson Fields. He was the oldest of 9 children (Robert, John (deceased) Mary Jean (deceased), Richard (deceased), Keith (deceased), Ann, Carol and James).
Henry graduated from Tipton High School in 1936 and married Mildred F. Martin who was a Tipton school teacher in 1941. They had one son, Dr. Henry W. Jr, of Columbus OH. Henry served in the US Navy during WWII as a metalsmith. He returned to Tipton and was employed by the US Post Office. He became an employee and partner of Geller Lumber which transitioned to Tipton Lumber and United Building Centers, both of which he managed. For approximately 3 decades, until 1996, he and Mildred owned and operated Fields Lumber in Tipton. Henry was a member of the Rotary, Masons, Shrine and Jesters. He served long terms on the Tipton School Board, Cedar County Fair Board and the Tipton Zoning Board. In 1996, they moved to Cottage Grove Place as two of its first occupants. For enjoyment, Fields was an avid golfer and fan of the Tipton and University of Iowa sports teams.
He was preceded in death by his wife Mildred, in 1999, and his long-time companion, Martha Sanner. Above all, he was most proud of his family who he would always revere in conversation. He is survived by several sisters and brothers; his son, Henry Jr; two grandchildren, Ben (Christy Henigan) of Powell, OH and Justin (Noelle LeCrone) of Flower Mound, TX and great grandchildren Greyson, Elizabeth and Ellery. He also leaves beloved niece Cindy Edge and dear friends Herb and Judy Isenberg of Cedar Rapids.
