Helen M. Behrens passed away on Saturday, March 22, 2014 at the age of 94, at Cedar Manor Nursing Home in Tipton. She was born July 2, 1919, to Ralph and Edna (French) Wingert. She shared almost sixty-two years of marriage with her husband, Milton Behrens, who preceded her in death in 2006. Also preceding her were sisters, Betty Wingert, Dorotha (LeRoy) Kakert, Louise (Albert) Redmond, Evelyn (Franklin) Karn, and brothers Wallace and Harold (Dorothy) Wingert.
Survivors include her sister, Elaine (Darrell) Hurdle, Oconomowoc, Wis., sister-in-law, Hilda Wingert of Tipton, and Ellen (Erwin) Behrens of Lowden, Iowa. Also surviving are special nephews Ron (Daisy) Wingert, Tipton, and Rich (Vicki) Behrens, Dysart, Iowa, and many other loving nephews, nieces and friends.
Helen received her higher education at Tipton Junior College and Iowa State Teachers College, now Northern Iowa University. She began teaching at Sharon Country School, then after her marriage taught primary grades in Lisbon, Lowden, Mechanicsville and Clarence. She was a devoted farm wife as well. After retiring in Tipton, she and Milton were active members of the Tipton Senior Center. They also enjoyed dancing, including square dance club.
Visitation will be held at the Fry Funeral Home in Tipton on Monday, March 24, 2014 from 2:00 pm until the time of service at 3:00 pm. Interment will follow at the Tipton Masonic Cemetery, after which friends and family are invited to lunch at the funeral home. If so desired, memorials may be given to Cedar Manor or the Tipton Senior Center.
