Funeral services for Bernal Shontz, 91, Tipton, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 20, 2016 at Fry Funeral Home in Tipton with burial at Tipton Masonic Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 19 at Fry Funeral Home. Mr. Shontz died June 10 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. The son of Harley and Mildred (Davis) Shontz, he was born Mar. 12, 1925 in Riverside. He is a graduate of Tipton High School. He married the late Eloise Heick on May 12, 1946 at Bennett. Mr. Shontz proudly served his country in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1943 to 1946. Mr. Shontz was a self-employed carpenter. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening and his grandchildren. Mr. Shontz is survived by 3 daughters, Connie (Billy) Cain; Carla (Arlo) Merritt; and Sally Shontz, all of Tipton; 2 sons, Gary (Margaret) Shontz, Cedar Falls; and Ward (Judy) Shontz, Moscow; 12 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; a sister, Joyce Dircks and husband, John; and sisters-in-law, Vivian Shontz and Edna Hartwig. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; a sister, Betty Rawhouser and husband Harold; and a brother, Francis (Jim) Shontz. A memorial fund has been established in Bernal's memory.
