Brenda L. Funston

Brenda L. Funston, 65, formerly of Tipton and Iowa City, entered the fullness of eternal life on June 25, 2026 while under the care of Birkwood Village in Fort Madison. Brenda was the daughter of Dwayne F. Stepanek and Myrta Jane Nicholas Stepanek. She started her life on August 20, 1960 when she was born in what we refer to ‘the old Mercy Hospital’ in Iowa City. She grew up in the West Branch area and graduated from West Branch High School in 1978. Brenda kept busy. She worked at a dispatcher for the Cedar County Sheriff’s Office for many years, helped other people by being their housekeeper and worked as a nurse’s aide. She loved to crochet, watch NASCAR races as well as the local races. Brenda was ‘very close’ to her mom, sweet, fun-loving and considerate of others. When she lived in Iowa City, she became a member of the Jehova’s Witness congregation.

Brenda is survived by her parents, Dwayne (Sandy) Stepanek, Myrta (Stan Woode) Stepanek, her brothers, Jerry Stepanek and Curt (Jamie) Woode and their children, Jazmine and Brady Woode, her aunt Shirley Lenz and uncle Buddy Nicholas as well as several cousins.
