Clarence Louis Paul Hartwig, son of Louis and Martha Sander Hartwig, was born September 4, 1920 in Cedar County, Iowa. Clarence was united in marriage to Hazel Griebel on February 6, 1946 in Bennett, Iowa. Clarence farmed the farm he was born on north of Bennett for 40 years, retiring in Bennett in 1988. He was a member of the Cedar Rambler's musical group and enjoyed playing the button accordion. A long time member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, he served as elder, head usher, and on the finance committee over the years. Clarence enjoyed congregate meals, playing cards, traveling and was an avid Chicago Cubs fan. Clarence is loved and survived by his wife, Hazel Hartwig of Bennett, Iowa; a son, Jerry Hartwig and wife Kay of Long Grove, Iowa; two daughters, Dr. Janet Murphy and husband Dr. Edward of Portland, Oregon, and Janine Schmitt and husband Colby of Portland, Oregon; her grandchildren, Edward, Daniel, and David Murphy, and Andrew and Angela Hartwig. He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Martha Hartwig; a brother, Edwin; and two infant brothers.
