David was born December 31, 1970, at Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the youngest son of Paul and Marjorie Pelzer. Growing up on the family farm, David enjoyed riding his bike, shooting hoops and playing with his loving, loyal dog, Benji. David also shared his birthday with his dad and niece, Tracy, so the highlight of his year was always a big family birthday party on New Year’s Eve.
David was a 1991 graduate of Tipton High School. After graduation, David moved into a group home in Tipton. He enjoyed many years of participating in the Special Olympics and time spent at Camp Courageous. In 2015 David moved once more to a Reach For Your Potential group home in Iowa City. He loved his home staff in Iowa City. They were his second family.
David kept busy attending Day Habilitation, eating out, shopping, reading, dancing and listening to music. He enjoyed West Music Company and going to 1st Avenue Club. David was a joyful soul. He had a special place in his heart for Sesame Street, Muppets and all things Snoopy.
David was preceded in death by his parents and nephew, Jacob Murphy. He is loved and survived by his siblings, James (Mary) Pelzer, Thomas (Brenda) Pelzer, Nanette (Wayne) Behrens, Joseph Pelzer, Edward (Molly) Pelzer, Mary (Maury) Moser, John (Cindy) Pelzer and Peggy (Mike) Murphy; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
David’s family extends their sincere thanks to his many caregivers, medical professionals, case managers, hospice staffers and the countless others who touched David’s life throughout the years. Thank you for assisting and loving David. We are forever grateful for each and every one of you.
