Donald Joseph Marchik

Peace was granted to Donald Joseph Marchik, our beloved husband, father, and brother, on August 29, 2026.

Donald was born to parents Lorna (Crock) and Robert Marchik on May 14, 1954. He lived much of his life in Tipton, where he attended the local High School, and grew up on a family farm. The third of seven children, he learned that shared responsibilities, farm chores, and animal caretaking were required of everyone, and that shared laughter and tears, and support of family and friends were the essence of what mattered in life. As Donald moved into his own life, he became the proud father of four children: Michael, Justin, Tracy and Kyle. In later years, he met and married his life partner and soulmate, Rhonda Wheaton.

For much of his working life, Donald was employed by the City of Tipton. He was a hard worker who took great pride in what he did, often taking on the tasks that others avoided. He willingly put in the effort required to see that a task was well done, whether it involved collecting refuse, doing street repairs, or plowing snow. His efforts made the City a better place for everyone.

Donald had a great appreciation for the natural world, grounded in his rural upbringing. He often expressed pure delight, much like that of a child upon first discovery, at the beauty in the world around him. His sense of wonder and enthusiasm seemed boundless, whether in amazement of seeing a bobcat during a morning walk through the woods, the thrill of discovering a nest of baby birds or rabbits sheltering together, the delight of playing with his beloved dogs, or the serene enjoyment of sharing a sunny afternoon with a friend or loved one as their fishing lines bobbed lazily in the water.

Like his father and both brothers, Donald also had a particular fondness for practical jokes and general mischief. Family lore was filled with many round-the-campfire retellings of such shenanigans – like using a rope to haul a picnic basket of puppies through the window to his second story bedroom (clearly a no-no), or chucking M&Ms into the back of the fan at the High School commons, or lashing a toilet to the chimney on the roof of his parents’ three story house while they were at church one Sunday morning. Such buffoonery, when discovered, was met with uproarious laughter and added a “notch to the belt” of the perpetrator(s) until it could be topped by the next bit of tomfoolery.

Donald lived his life on a big canvas; he was large in stature, carried a booming voice and displayed an arms-wide-open embrace of life. Yet at heart, he was a true gentle giant, who cradled the vulnerable and the sacred, in his wide embrace. He was a loyal friend, quick with a smile, and ready to offer a helping hand whenever needed. In a world too often characterized by cheap, knock-off goods and shallow relationships, Donald was the genuine article -- a good man, with a heart of gold, deeply committed to his family and friends. We will miss him dearly.

Donald is survived by: his wife, Rhonda; his four children, Michael (Janet), Tracy Wright (Sean), Justin, and Kyle (Jessica); his five siblings, Dennis (Mary Ellen), Billie (Sandy), Catherine Sloan (Don), Maggie, and Diane (Joe); his many grandchildren; and his beloved pets.

A celebration of life will be held at St. Mary’s Parish Hall in Tipton on Sunday, September 13th from Noon to 3:00 PM to honor Donald. Everyone is welcome. There will be a luncheon followed by a time of sharing. For those who choose to do so, there will be an opportunity to share thoughts, stories and anecdotes of Donald’s life.

In lieu of flowers, Donald’s family asks that you carry forward, in your own way, the values that he embodied. Take a moment to reflect on what brings you joy, seek it out, and share it with those around you.
