Gertrude Augusta Clara Kohlmeier was born on June 15, 1907 in Dakota City, Nebraska the daughter of Henry and Anna Riesche Kohlmeier. She attended rural schools and graduated from Wakefield High School in 1925 and the Lutheran Hospital School of Nursing in Norfolk, Nebraska in 1929. On April 8, 1939, she married Edgar W. Marburger in Lawton, Oklahoma. While in Lawton she worked as a surgical nurse until her children were born. She was active in local community organizations. She helped with voter registration and the American Red Cross, taught Sunday School and served as the hostess for the Lutheran Service Center in Lawton.
