Glen Ellsworth Hakeman, 87, of Tipton, died peacefully with his family by his side early Sunday morning, November 19, 2017, while under the care of Mercy Hospice in the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice Home in Hiawatha. Glen's life will be celebrated the way he requested with a Masonic Funeral to be held on Saturday, December 2, 2017 at 3:00 pm in the chapel of Fry Funeral Home, Tipton, Iowa. Online condolences may be shared at www.fryfuneralhome.com. Glen, son of Floyd Ellsworth and Edna Martha Zahren Hakeman, was born on June 19, 1930 in White, South Dakota. Glen was raised in Sutherland, IA and was a graduate of Sutherland High School with the Class of 1948. Glen was inducted into the United States Army in 1951, and served his country during the Korean War and was honorably discharged in1953 with the rank of Sergeant. Glen graduated from Buena Vista College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1957. On November 22, 1953 Glen was united in marriage to Joyce Ellen Swindle in LeMars, Iowa. Glen had the gift of teaching. He taught business courses in Climbing Hill, Danbury, and at Riverside and East High Schools in Sioux City Iowa from 1957 until 1979. Glen continued his work as a hail insurance field man for Square Deal Crop Hail Insurance Company. Glen and Joyce lived in Storm Lake, Climbing Hill, Danbury, Sioux City, Manchester, Sutherland, and moved to Tipton, IA in 2006 to be near their son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Laurie Hakeman. Glen and Joyce have wintered over at their home in Edinburg Tx every year since 1996. Glen was raised as a Master Mason in the Masonic Lodge in Danbury IA in 1962. He is a Past Master of Manchester Lodge #165 in Manchester, IA and was recognized as a Fifty Year Mason in 2012. He was a member of Cedar Lodge #11 in Tipton along with his son, Roger and grandson Clinton. He was formerly a member of Abiff Lodge in Sutherland, Iowa. He was past-president and an active member the Masonic NCT Camping Club since 1995 and was a member of the First United Church of Christ in Tipton. Glen is survived by his wife of 64 years, Joyce Hakeman of Tipton, son Roger and his wife, Laurie, of Tipton, grandchildren, Christopher Alford, Krista Tockey and Clint Hakeman, and great granddaughter, Carolyn Tockey; sister, Bonnie James and her husband, H. Joe of Monona, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Harold Hakeman and Rodney W. Hakeman.
