J. Leon Timmerman

J. Leon Timmerman, son of August & Veronica Vlaminck Timmerman, was born January 23, 1913, in Moline, Illinois. He attended rural schools near Toronto in Clinton County, Iowa. Mr. Timmerman was united in marriage to Alice DeWulf on January 24, 1935 at St. James Catholic Church in Toronto, Iowa. Leon and Alice operated farms in Big Rock and Plainview area in Scott County. They moved to the Bennett area in 1947 where they farmed until their retirement. They returned to their ancestral homeland of Belgium five times to visit relatives. He enjoyed playing cards, dancing, and spending time with his family, especially seeing the little ones. Leon was active in the Bennett community serving as a charter member of the West Bennett Development Corporation. He was a director/owner of Bennett State Bank for 38 years and was co-owner of Bennett Ford Company for several years. He served on the Bennett Consolidated School Board and was a former member of the Bennett Community Club and the Cedar County Farm Bureau. Mr. Timmerman is survived by his wife, Alice of Tipton; sons, Lee Timmerman & wife, Dolores of Bennett, Iowa, Larry Timmerman & wife, Jane of Ocala, Florida, and David Timmerman & wife, Joni of Bennett, Iowa; daughters, Barbara Ihns & husband, Bill of Massillon, Iowa, Beverly Green of Bennett, Iowa and Theresa Quinn & husband, Larry of Lowden, Iowa; 22 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great-grandchild, 11 step-grandchildren, 31 step great-grandchildren, 12 step great-great-grandchildren; and sisters, Jennie Goethals of Bennett, Iowa, Zelma Goethals of Tipton, Iowa and Alice Caes of De Witt, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents, August & Veronica Timmerman; a granddaughter, Angela Costello, a daughter in-law,Janice Timmerman a son in-law, George Green and brother, Julius Timmerman.
