Jacob Prentice York, 95, of Tipton died Tuesday, January 4, 2011. Prentice was born on February 27, 1915 in Cedar County, Iowa and was the son of George and Bess Bohrer York. He was a graduate of Tipton High School, class of 1932. On January 22, 1938 Prentice was united in marriage to Stella G. Naber in Clinton, Iowa. After many years of farming, Prentice and Stella moved to Tipton and owned and operated York Real Estate and Insurance until they retired. Prentice was a member of the Tipton Rotary Club, served on the Cedar County Assessor Board of Review for many years, was active in the Friends of the Tipton Public Library, as well as fundraising for the March of Dimes in Tipton. Prentice was associated with The Church of the Brethren and the United Church of Christ. Prentice loved to read and was an almost daily honored visitor to the Tipton Public Library. He also loved his morning walks followed by coffee downtown with his buddies. Another of his favorite things was doing "handyman" projects around the house ... including climbing up his ladder onto the roof of his house well into his 90's! (much to the displeasure of friends and family!) Prentice is survived by his sons, Jerry and wife, Carol York of Cape May, N.J. and Phillip York of Lomita, CA; grandson, Dr. Aaron York and wife, Daisy Rockwell of Lebanon, N.H. and their daughter, Serafina Rose York; granddaughter, Gillian and husband, Butch Marcello of Robbinsville, N.J.; sister, Mary Achenbach of Cedar Rapids, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife. A general memorial fund has been established in memory of Prentice. A memorial service will take place at a future date.
