Joann was born on January 23, 1937. She grew up in Tipton, Iowa, and graduated from Tipton High School, where she was a cheerleader and twirler. On December 14, 1958, she married Darrell Lee Coppess, and together they welcomed their only son, Mark Coppess. Joann worked on the family farm, as a dental assistant, secretary, bookkeeper, and at the Cedar County Courthouse. However, her main role and greatest joy was as a homemaker. Throughout her life, Joann was completely devoted to taking wonderful care of her husband, Darrell, and their son, Mark. She selflessly dedicated herself to her family, always showing love in everything she did.
Joann was a devoted Christian and lifelong resident of Cedar County. She lived most of her life in Stanwood. In her free time, she enjoyed playing cards and board games, cooking, bowling, and cheering on the Iowa State and University of Iowa sports teams. Most of all, she was a loving, dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who treasured spending time with her family.
In her passing, Joann leaves behind her beloved husband of 66 years, Darrell Coppess; her son, Dr. Mark Coppess, of Memphis, Tennessee; her two grandsons, Michael Coppess of Raleigh, North Carolina, and Dr. William Coppess of Johnson City, Tennessee; and one great-granddaughter, Callen Coppess, of Johnson City, Tennessee. She also leaves her cherished sister, Darlene Eichelberger, of Atalissa, Iowa. Joann was preceded in death by her loving parents, Carl and Ruth Marolf, who have now welcomed her into eternal peace.
