Joyce Ellen (Swindle) Hakeman

Joyce Ellen Hakeman, 90, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, December 15, 2022 in her apartment at Prairie Hills Assisted Living in Tipton, IA.

Joyce was born in Mitchell, SD on January 23, 1932 to Eleanor and Francis Swindle.  Her mother moved Joyce and sister Francella to Le Mars, IA in January 1933 after her father died in a lumber yard accident in Marcus, IA.  She was raised in Le Mars and graduated from Le Mars High School in 1950.  She was employed by Vallet Cleaners and Vander Meer Bakery.

She was united in marriage to Glen Hakeman on November 22, 1953 in Le Mars.  Born to this union was a son, Roger, who now resides in Tipton, IA.

Glen and Joyce lived in Storm Lake, Climbing Hill, Danbury, Sioux City, Manchester, Sutherland, and moved to Tipton, IA in 2005 to be near their son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Laurie Hakeman.  Glen and Joyce wintered over at their home in Edinburg, Tx for twenty-two years where they enjoyed the company of many long-time friends at Valhalla Park from 1995 until Glen’s death in November of 2017.   After Glen’s death, Joyce moved to Prairie Hills Assisted Living in Tipton where she resided until her death.  Joyce was a member of First United Church of Christ in Tipton.

Joyce has enjoyed throughout her life the many life-long friendships she made.  All their married life Joyce and Glen enjoyed camping and had various RVs.  They belonged to the National Camping and Traveler’s Club, a Masonic organization.  Joyce enjoyed book clubs, women’s clubs and church activities over their sixty-four years together.

Joyce is survived by her son Roger and daughter-in-law Laurie Hakeman of Tipton, her three adult grandchildren Christopher Alford of Portland, OR, Krista Tockey of Atlanta, GA, Clint Hakeman of Des Moines and a great-granddaughter, Carolyn. Joyce was preceded in death by her husband Glen, her father and mother, her sister Francella and brother-in-law Ronald Hinspeter of Marcus, IA.
