Lynn Allan Phelps, 84, of Tipton, passed away Saturday, November 29, 2025, at Downtown University of Iowa Hospitals (Mercy Hospital), surrounded by his loving family.
Lynn was born September 10, 1941, in Tipton, Cedar County, Iowa, to Leslie Domer Phelps and Imogene “Immy” (Sisler) Phelps. He graduated from Tipton High School with the Class of 1959. He married his high school sweetheart, Neva Jean Moeller, beginning a lifelong partnership filled with devotion and joy.
He worked for United Telephone Company as a switchman for 33 years, retiring in 2007. Lynn also dedicated himself to the Tipton Fire Department, serving as a volunteer firefighter for 31 years and holding the role of secretary-treasurer for many of those years. He was an EMT and contributed his time to the Tipton Country Club board, reflecting his commitment to community service.
A passionate sports fan, Lynn especially loved cheering for the Chicago Cubs. He rarely missed a chance to support his sons, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren in their athletic endeavors, faithfully attending games and celebrating their achievements.
In retirement, Lynn enjoyed golfing, cultivating his prized tomatoes, vacationing in Arizona, taking bus trips across Iowa, and, of course, attending Cubs games whenever he could.
He is survived by his wife, Neva; three sons, Kevin Phelps of Wichita, KS, Kirk (Robin) Phelps of Minot, ND, and Bradley (Kim) Phelps of Spencer, IA; sisters, Rebecca (Bill) Laird and Kathy Kessenich; grandchildren, Jennifer (Derek) Latimer, Dalton Phelps, Brody Phelps, Adam (Ashlie) Phelps, Andrew (Alison) Phelps, Alexis (Matthias) Schwartzkopf, Bethany Phelps, and Maggie Phelps; and great-grandchildren, Jacob Boedeker, Justin Boedeker, Brooke Boedeker, Rory Jean Schwartzkopf, Ellie Mae Schwartzkopf, Adali Phelps, Aurora Phelps, and Carson Phelps.
Lynn was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Wayne Phelps; daughter-in-law, Nikki (Behrens) Phelps; and granddaughter, Jodi Marie Phelps.
A private family burial will be held this coming spring. A public gathering to celebrate Lynn’s life will also be held this spring at the Tipton Country Club—a place he loved, where he spent countless hours golfing, helping Chris tend the greens and fairways, and enjoying time with friends and family alike.
