Mary Janice Prevo Hummel, 91, daughter of Clyde E. and Blanch Steel Prevo, was born on December 24, 1916 in Davis County, Iowa. She attended Troy Consolidated High School, NE Missouri State Teachers College, and taught in the Troy and Pulaski Schools. In 1943 she enlisted in the Navy and served during WWII at the Armed Guard Center in New Orleans, LA. Shortly after her honorable discharge from the military, Mary moved to Tipton, Iowa where she met Richard S. Hummel, owner of the local Superior Dairy. They were married October 6, 1950 at the First United Methodist Church and made their lifelong home in Tipton. Mary taught at the Tipton Community School for over 18 years; she was a committed educator. She is survived by her son Todd and his wife Dianne of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, step-grandchildren Elise, Erynn and Dustin and step-great grandchildren Sam and Emilia; as well as several nieces and nephews. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Clyde and Blanch and her step-mother Stella, her sisters, Verna Mae and LaVelle and her brother, Vaughn, and her step-great granddaughter Rylee. Mary was known for her delicious gourmet cooking and her love for collecting fine china and crystal. She was an active member of many organizations and clubs including the DAR and PEO. Mary maintained a keen interest in life even in her later years and never lost her spunk.
