Norman Earl Hinrichs, 83, of Bennett, died Saturday, April 16, 2011 in Mechanicsville Nursing & Rehab Center. Memorial services will be held 10:30 AM, Thursday, April 21, 2011 in Peace Church of Christ United, Bennett, with Pastor Barbra Keiper officiating. Burial will follow in Inland Cemetery where full military rites will be given by the Bennett American Legion. Norman was born on January 10, 1928 to Gustav and Amanda (Stuehm) Hinrichs in Bennett, IA. He attended Bennett School from 1st through 10th grades and then attended Tipton schools in 11th and 12th grades following the Bennett School Fire. He graduated from Tipton High School in the Class of 1945. Norman served in the U. S. Army Air Force from 1946 - 1947. He then was stricken with tuberculosis and spent 2 years recovering at the Oakdale facility. Norman was employed at Bennett Locker, French and Hecht, Dixon Implement and Schneider Ford Tractor of Bennett. He then worked at W.W. Grainger of Davenport from 1973 until his retirement in 1990. Norman was a member of Peace Church of Bennett and a former church council member. He was also an active member of the Bennett Senior Citizens. Norman was known as a very friendly person who was always willing to volunteer when needed. He was always ready to provide a ride to the Senior Citizens meals for anyone who needed them. Norman helped in set-up for the Senior Citizens bingo each week and also helped with the Peace Church newsletter assembly. Norman also recently researched the past 55 years of Peace Church meeting minutes to provide a catalog of all the building and facility changes that have been made since the church was built. He was a member of the 3/30 Club in Lowden and enjoyed playing golf as often as possible. He was also a lifelong baseball fan and could discuss just about anything that happened in baseball over the past 70 years. Norman is survived by several cousins and was preceded in death by his parents.
