Listen to Obituary

Robert Lewis McGregor, son of John A. and Pearl Maarks McGregor, was born July 29, 1918, in Oxford Junction, Iowa. He graduated from Oxford Junction High School and served in the United States Navy. On August 5, 1940, Bob was united in marriage to Betty Jane Moore in Tipton, Iowa; a marriage that would span 67 years. He was a member of the Lions, VFW, American Legion, and Iowa Hawkeye Horseshoe Pitchess Association. Bob started working as a Bridge Builder in Oxford Junction and then worked as a teller for Northern Trust Bank of Chicago. When he joined the Navy he took the Seabees because of his construction background. He then worked as a mechanic at Ford Motor Company in Tipton. Later he bought the Shell station in Tipton and operated it for 9 1/2 years. Bob sold Mormons Feed for a while and eventually worked for Cedar County as an Equipment operator until his retirement. One of his greatest loves was his love of fishing. He made sure all of his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren were introduced to fishing and had a fishing pole. One of his greatest thrills was catching a 56 lb. flathead catfish at the age of 79. It is the 2nd largest catfish caught in Iowa. Bob is loved and survived by his wife, Betty McGregor of Lone Tree, Iowa; son, Terry McGregor and wife, Darlene of Coralville, Iowa; daughter, Dixie Meyer and husband, David of Lone Tree, Iowa; and brothers, Donald McGregor of Austin, Texas and Warren McGregor of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; 12 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Jerry McGregor; grandson, Kevin Swart; brothers, Harold, Bud, Jim, and Jack; sisters, Louise, Thelma, Flavel, and Ruthie; several sisters and brothers-in-law; and nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to the Lone Tree First Responders and/or Hospice in memory of Bob.
