Ronald Burroughs, born on Christmas Day in 1938, was a man of unwavering determination and boundless energy. From an early age, he embodied the spirit of a true go-getter, never content to sit idle. Friends often described him as “a fart in a griddle,” capturing his perpetual motion and zest for life.
At just 16 years old, Ron took on a job delivering milk alongside Bill Hostettler in the early morning hours. His dedication didn’t go unnoticed; even after a long shift, he’d head straight to school, occasionally nodding off at his desk. The understanding teachers recognized his work ethic and forgave these moments of fatigue.
Ron graduated from Tipton High School in 1957 and soon enlisted to serve his country with the United States Army. His service spanned 2 years, and upon returning home to Tipton, fate intervened. Nancy Rife, once an on-and-off flame, was asked to accompany Bill Hobstetter to pick him up. Their reunion marked the beginning of a lifelong partnership.
On February 21, 1960, in Tipton, IA, Ron and Nancy exchanged vows. Together, they raised four children: Shelley, Scot, Steve, and Rick. Ron’s commitment to his family knew no bounds. His tireless work ethic ensured they never went without, whether he was horseshoeing at the stables in Marengo or serving as a mechanic at Louis Rich.
Ron’s dedication earned him the role of Maintenance Supervisor at Louis Rich. Even in retirement, he remained indispensable, returning twice to assist the company during management transitions. But family was his true joy. Grandchildren and great-grandchildren held a special place in his heart, and he attended their events with pride.
In quieter moments, Ron sat on his porch, watching traffic pass by, or cast his line into the water alongside friends Dave Williams and Bob Spies. His loyal companion, Queenie—a West Highland Terrier—often perched on his lap, a testament to his tender nature.
Above all, Ron’s love for Nancy, his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren defined him. He worked tirelessly to provide for their every need and want. His strength was matched only by his compassion. As we bid farewell, we remember Ronald Burroughs—a man whose legacy will echo through generations. He will be dearly missed.
Ron is survived by his loving wife, Nancy, their daughter Shelly (Burroughs) Stuhr, and sons Scot, Steve, and Rick Burroughs. Ron leaves behind a legacy of family bonds, with 8 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren who will forever cherish his memory. His brothers, Jack and Bill Burroughs, along with their wives, also mourn his loss.
Ron has peacefully reunited with his beloved parents and two cherished sisters, Shirley (Burroughs) Aikman and Ruby Burroughs.
