Thomas Virgil Wegener, 79, of Tipton, Iowa, was called home into the arms of his Heavenly Father on Saturday, March 21, 2026, at Clarence Nursing Home in Clarence, Iowa.
Tom was born on December 13, 1946, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the son of Virgil Albert and Jean Frances (Wilke) Wegener. He was raised in Tipton, where he grew up working on the family farm and developed a lifelong love for livestock, especially cattle. As a young man, he was active in 4-H, showing pigs and cultivating a passion for agriculture and youth involvement that remained with him throughout his life. His faith was also important from an early age, and he was honored to receive the Lutheran Lamb Award in 2023.
He graduated from Bennett High School and went on to proudly serve his country in the United States Army, including time stationed in Germany.
On October 4, 2008, Tom was united in marriage to Jani “Mae” Wanzell. Together, they made their home in rural Tipton on his family farm.
Tom was a lifelong farmer, but his impact extended far beyond the land he worked. He had a deep passion for cattle and the livestock industry and was a familiar face at cattle shows across the country, including Denver, Kansas City, Texas, and beyond. Whether working the gate, helping in the ring, or offering guidance, Tom was always where he was needed. Known for his steady presence and willingness to serve, he took great pride in helping young exhibitors succeed.
A devoted supporter of 4-H and the Cedar County Fair, Tom was inducted into the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame in recognition of his years of service. He could often be found at the fairgrounds early in the morning, making sure everything was ready before others arrived. He enjoyed sharing his knowledge with young people, giving rides around the grounds, and encouraging the next generation. His commitment helped create a place where others could learn, grow, and feel welcomed.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Lowden, the American Legion, the Lions Club, and the Cedar County Cattlemen. He was a devoted Iowa Hawkeye fan, and was involved with the Iowa Athletic Union and was a member of the I-Club.
Tom also had a love for music and sound equipment and was often behind the scenes running sound or announcing events at the fairgrounds. He also enjoyed traveling and spending time with his many friends.
Closer to home, Tom treasured time with his family and was especially proud to be a grandfather. He enjoyed his morning coffee group and was known for stopping in to visit friends—often unannounced, but always welcome. He had a way of making people smile, often parting with his familiar “Take care, bear,” or choosing a seat “on the 50-yard line” wherever he went.
Above all, Tom’s faith in Christ was the foundation of his life. He was known as a generous and kind man who quietly lived out his faith in the way he treated others.
Tom is survived by his wife, Jani Wanzell of Tipton; his daughter, Kathryn (Jon) Franks; his grandchildren, Marley and Grace; his sister, Cathryn (Adrian) Wegener; along with nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Mark (Donna) Wegener; his stepson, Daniel Clausen; and a special family friend, Cecil.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 28, 2026, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lowden, with Daniel Redhage officiating. Burial will follow at Tipton Masonic Cemetery with military honors. Family and friends are invited to return to the church following graveside services for a luncheon in Tom's honor.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, March 27, 2026, at Fry Funeral Home in Tipton.
