Virgil Albert Wegener, son of Albert and Florence Meyer Wegener, was born on March 4, 1924 near New Liberty, Iowa. Virgil attended country school during his younger years and then graduated from the Durant High School. Virgil was united in marriage to Jean Frances Wilke on January 27, 1946 in St. Marks Lutheran Church in Davenport, Iowa. Virgil and Jean raised three children on their farm, Thomas, Cathryn and Mark. Virgil was a farmer all of his life. He was the kind of man who never knew a stranger, always had a positive outlook on life and had time for a friendly conversation. His smile was truly genuine. Virgil was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Bennett for many years. He enjoyed all types of music and dancing. Virgil is survived by his sons, Thomas V. Wegener of Tipton, Iowa and Mark D. Wegener and wife, Donna, of McLean, Virginia; a daughter, Cathryn Wegener and husband, Adrian Corpus, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; grandchildren, Tara Lamond, David Wegener and Missy Wegener; great-grandchild, Lucy Jean Lamond; sisters, Mrs. Phyllis Paulsen and husband, Howard, of Wilton, Iowa, and Mrs. Dorothy Gibson and husband, Dexter, of Dixon, Iowa; and a very special friend, Marjory Stubbe, of Monticello, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Jean, who died on July 9, 1994. Memorials may be made to Mercy Hospital ICU in Iowa City and St. Paul Lutheran Church in Bennett in memory of Virgil.
