William Hobstetter

January 20, 1910 — February 12, 2004

William Arthur Hobstetter, son of Arthur P. & Arabelle Armstrong Hobstetter, was born January 20, 1910, in Tipton, Iowa. He was among the first graduating class of Tipton Jr. College in 1929, he then graduated from the University of Iowa in 1931, with a Bachelor Degree. In 1934, Bill was united in marriage to Clara Walters in West Liberty, Iowa. Clara passed away in 1943. He then married Evelyn Moss in 1951, in Iowa City, Iowa. Bill was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, a past member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity, the Tipton Chamber of Commerce, Tipton Moose Lodge, and the Tipton Country Club. Bill started selling milk when he was 10 years old. His uncle gave him a pet cow and the neighbors wanted to buy the milk. As demand increased his uncle took him to the bank, at the age of 11, and arranged for a loan to buy more cows. Soon his herd increased to 28 cows. In the late 1930's, he started pasteurizing the milk he was selling. In 1947, he started buying milk from Sanitary Farm Dairy. To keep busy he expanded the business outside the city and developed routes throughout the county. He continued his delivery service until retiring at the age of 82. Bill is survived by his wife, Evelyn Hobstetter of Tipton, Iowa; his daughters, Frances Lonergan of Cordova, IL, Sandy Childs & husband Larry of Tipton, IA, and Mary Jo Geadelmann & husband Larry of Tipton, Iowa; 9 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and his sister, Florence Davis of Iowa City, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur & Arabelle Hobstetter; and his first wife, Clara Hobstetter.
