Betty, daughter of Robert Ivan and Evelyn (Ford) Clark, was born on Saturday, July 20, 1946 in Cedar Rapids, IA and graduated with the Lincoln High School, Class of 1965. On August 23, 1965, Betty married the love of her life, Charles Ervin Johnson and they farmed together for over 50 years. Betty was a member of the Red Hat Society and loved all animals. She especially loved her cats, her dogs, and without discrimination, she loved her cows too! In her spare time, when she wasn’t milking cows, hauling corn or mowing the lawn, Betty loved to give her pets a ride while she rode around on her Honda four-wheeler.
Betty had God given artistic talents and a giver’s heart, which she gladly shared with those around her. She could paint and build anything. She was most noted for: the farm scenes she painted on sawblades, making dolls that could be transformed into scarecrows or Thanksgiving and Christmas characters and building wood cabinets. Betty was in charge of organizing neighborhood memorials and many families received the beautiful bereavement gift of her handcrafted personalized Memorial Lanterns.
Betty was a go getter and yet, always had time for her family. If she wasn’t painting into the early morning hours, she was sewing clothes and making costumes for the church Nativity Play, she was enjoying her ‘Cousin Thursdays’ where she would get together and go somewhere with her cousins. She will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved her.
Betty is survived by her husband, Charles; daughters, Terri Jo Lawless of Independence, IA and Tina (Robert) Hanks of Mechanicsville, IA; brother, Jim (Mary) Clark of Tipton, IA; sisters-in-law, both of Mechanicsville, IA, Colleen (Chuck) Svoboda and Carla (David) Barnhart; brothers-in-law, both of Mechanicsville, IA, LeRoy Jackson and Cletus (Alberta) Johnson; and grandchildren, Taylor Ciha of Mechanicsville, IA, Luke Lawless of Independence, IA, Trevor Hanks of Clinton, IA, and Trent Hanks of Mechanicsville, IA. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Joyce Jackson; mother-in-law, Betty Mae Johnson, and son-in-law, David Lawless.
