Grant Winford White, 96, passed away on November 17, 2023 at the Cedar Manor Nursing Home in Tipton.
He was born on September 20, 1927 in Tipton, Iowa to Grant W. and Edna (Giese) White. After graduating from Tipton High School in 1945, Grant completed basic training before becoming a Morse code instructor at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey. He was honorably discharged in December 1946.
Grant attended Drake University as a law student where he met Jane Virginia Gallager. They married in 1948. After completing law school in 1952, Grant, Jane, and their daughter, Chris, moved to Tipton to open a law practice. Their son, Michael, was born later that year.
He loved sailing and was a member of the Lake Davenport Sailing Club for many years. Grant also attended regattas in other states. He was fond of hunting and enjoyed his English pointers (Princess and later Missy). Grant excelled at crossword puzzles, took pleasure in making bread from scratch, and was a consummate punster. He was an avid reader and was fond of watching PBS mysteries.
Grant and Jane spent many years traveling domestically and overseas, including Europe, Scandinavia, Great Britain, and the Far East.
After nearly 40 years practicing law, Grant retired in 1991. He and Jane moved to St. Simons Island, Georgia where they enjoyed the advantages of a southern climate and snow-free winters. After Jane’s death in 2018, Grant had continued to live in their St. Simons condo until recently.
Grant is survived by his daughter, Chris (Russ); Michael (Jeanne); grandchildren, Ryan and Adam (Tracy); great-grandchildren, Mark and Luke; and close friends, Bill and Pam Horan.
