John Harm Bents, 86, of Tipton, died Friday, August 9, 2019 at the Mechanicsville Nursing Home. A Rosary will start the visitation on August 13 at 8:30 AM and they will receive friends until the start of Funeral Mass at 10:30 AM at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Tipton, Iowa. A graveside service with military honors will be provided by Tipton American Legion Post #123 and the Tipton V.F.W. Post #2537 at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery. John was born on October 20, 1932 in Scotch Grove, Iowa to Jake and Mary (Bahnken) Bents. He attended Olin High School before serving his country for 4 years in the U.S. Air Force. John married his lifetime partner Mary Jean Crock in January 2, 1957 at Tipton’s St. Mary’s Catholic Church. He spent 25 years working for Long Manufacturing and later worked as a security guard at N.C.S. He enjoyed fishing, dirt racing and always had a great sense of humor.
Surviving John is his beloved wife, Mary Jean; daughters Patricia (Tony) Christensen of Iowa City and Sarah Maiden of Tipton; sons Thomas (Nancy) Bents of Le Claire, Edward Bents of Cedar Rapids, and Joseph (Gina) Bents of Green Bay, Wisconsin; grandchildren Brandon Bents, Nicole Sieverding, Jacob Bents, Lindsay Bents, and John Christensen. John is preceded in death by his parents, daughter Cynthia Bents, sister Betty Himes, and brothers James and Donald Bents.
