Margaret Elaine Suchomel, 94, of Tipton died peacefully of natural causes at Cedar Manor Nursing Home on June 27, 2023.
Margaret was born on July 16, 1928, in Harvey, North Dakota. She was the daughter of Arthur and Blanche (Small) Morris. Her family relocated to Osage, Iowa in 1937, to Clermont, Iowa in 1941 and then to West Union where Margaret graduated from high school in 1946. She received a BA in music education from the Iowa State Teachers College in 1950 and that same year moved to Tipton to begin her first teaching assignment. This began a 35-year career in Tipton Community Schools teaching both music and English. Margaret was united in marriage to Francis (Frank) Suchomel on July 24, 1952, in Calmar, Iowa. She and her husband purchased the Cedar Bluff general store in 1955. Margaret resided in Cedar Bluff until 2008 when she moved back to Tipton.
Margaret is survived by her son Barton (Karen) Suchomel of Denver, Colorado; grandsons Bryce Suchomel, San Diego, CA, Lucas Suchomel, San Francisco, CA, and Jesse Suchomel, Los Angeles, CA; brother James (Judy) Morris of Austin, TX; and nieces Stacy Pandy, Austin, TX and Kerry Rosen, Manhasset, NY. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Frank.
Margaret was a well-respected and remembered teacher. She especially loved teaching music to young children. She loved piano and was organist at her church and for countless weddings and funerals in the area, as well as regularly playing piano at the Tipton Senior Center. Margaret enjoyed swimming, golf, reading, knitting, playing Bridge and Cribbage, and visiting with friends. She was involved with volunteer activities at the Tipton Senior Center and with Tri Sigmas.
Margaret was always keen to travel and special memories for her were summer visits to her brother’s lake home in upstate New York and trips to the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. She participated in numerous Elderhostels and twice visited Santiago, Chile where her son and his family resided for several years.
All services will be held on Friday, July 7, 2023. A visitation at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Tipton from 9:30 am – 11:00 am, a funeral service officiated by Father James Flattery, at 11:00 am, and a luncheon at 11:45 am. Following the luncheon, internment services will be held at St. Bridget’s Cemetery, Nolan Settlement.
