Robert “Bob”, son of George Albert and Luella Alice (Burkholder) Thumma, was born on Wednesday, December 12, 1928 in Stanwood, IA. After graduating Stanwood High School in 1946, Bob served his country as an airplane electrician in the US Navy, from June 1946 to June 1948. After his honorable discharge from the Navy, Bob returned home and purchased his parent’s farm, south of Tipton. On August 26, 1951, Bob married Betty Jane Rehmke in Oxford Junction, IA. Together, Bob and Betty farmed crops and raised livestock; mostly feeder cattle and hogs. Bob was a conscientious man, known to be strict but fair and always thinking of others before himself. He loved his family first and foremost. Every year, he would sell four cows and apply that income towards his children’s future; helping pay for such things as their first car and their future education. Bob was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church and the Farm Bureau. He was Rochester Township Trustee for 28 years, a Committeeman on the Township ASC (Soil Conservation of America) and was Township Director. At the age of 70, Bob started driving for Riverbend Transit, a job he enjoyed for over 15 years. Throughout his marriage, Bob also enjoyed ballroom dancing with Betty, well into his 80’s.
Bob is survived by his wife, Betty of Tipton, IA; daughters, Judith Youngs of West Liberty, IA and Nancy Gagner (Chris Urmie) of Stanwood, IA; son, Mark (Deb) Thumma of Tipton, IA; daughter-in-law, Becky Thumma of Rochester, IA; sister, Helen (Richard) Smith of Tipton, IA; eight grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Luella; son, John Thumma; sisters, Hazel Thumma and Jean Thumma; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Merle (Mary) Thumma, Glenn (Lee) Thumma, Melvin (Rosetta) Thumma, Harold (Norma) Thumma and Dale (Francis) Thumma.
