Shirley Rae Howard Palmer was born July 1, 1935, in Cedar County, Iowa in Cass Township to Russell Clarke and Nola Marie Achenbach Howard. Shirley attended Plato School, West Branch School, Tipton High School and graduated from Mercy School of Nursing in 1970. On December 20, 1952, Shirley was united in marriage to Richard Burdell Palmer in Tipton, Iowa. She worked as a Registered Nurse in the Operating Room at the University of Iowa, Mercy Hospital and the VA Hospital in Iowa City, as well as Memorial Hospital in Corpus Christi, Texas. Shirley attended United Methodist Church in Tipton and was a member of Eastern Star, Tri-Sigma and Nursing Affiliations. She was a Cub Scout Den Mother and sang in the Tipton Methodist Church Choir. Shirley is survived by her husband, Richard B. Palmer of Tipton, Iowa; daughters, Suzanne M. (Mrs. Mike) Morrow of Storm Lake, Iowa, Patricia D. (Mrs. Joel) Collinson of Dallas Center, Iowa, and Pamela R. (Mrs. Rick) Loring of Iowa City, Iowa; sons, Michael A. Palmer of Peoria, Illinois and Richard R. Palmer of Austin, Texas; grandchildren, Mike Morrow, Erik Morrow, Kristin Palmer, Matt Morrow, Amber Phelps, Joe Collinson, Scott Palmer, Adreanne Collinson, and Brian Palmer; great-grandchildren, Miranda Morrow, Stormy Bauwens, Kaben Morrow, and Alyssa Rothman; sister, Rosemary (Mrs. Robert) Wertzbaugher of Atalissa, Iowa and brother, Keith (Vivian) Howard of West Branch, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents, Russell and Nola Howard; son-in-law, Michael Craig Morrow; and mother and father-in-law, William and Ursela Palmer. A memorial has been established in honor of Shirley for Legacy Gardens of Iowa City and Iowa City Hospice.
